The Phantom Carriage (1921) is Swedish film whose slow meditative pacing and telescoping, story-within-a-story plot line, creates a mesmerizing tale. Renowned Swedish film-maker Ingmar Bergman called it one of his favorite films and claimed to watch it once a year. It’s use of special effects and its complex story-line influenced generations of film-makers (see, for instance, the bathroom-door scene from “The Shining”).
